Iodine is found and utilized in each of our body’s approx. 40 trillions cells. Without appropriate iodine, life is impossible. Iodine is a universal nutrient that brings health on many levels.
In the 1930s, iodine was added to salt for prevention of goiter, especially found in the iodine-poor and rainy northwest areas of the United States.
Dr. Guy Abraham, one of the world’s leading iodine researchers, has shown that the necessary daily intake of iodine to have enough for the whole body is at least 13 mg a day. This corresponds to the Japanese intake of 13.8 mg iodine / day derived mainly from sea plants.
The thyroid gland requires 6 mg iodine / day and the women’s breasts approx. 5 mg iodine / day.
Today it is estimated that 72% of all have iodine deficiency and of vegetarians up to 80%.
The World Health Organization (WHO 2007) has acknowledged that iodine deficiency is the world’s biggest single cause of preventable mental retardation. In addition, WHO and ICCID have related iodine deficiency to impaired fertility and problem pregnancies with miscarriages, stillbirths, and low birth weight infants who have lower rates of survival.
Recommended Daily Intake (RDI) of iodine at 0.150 mg / day is far too small to provide optimum health.
Historically, as early as 1911, people could take between 300 – 900 mg of iodine daily without any problems.
The 1948 Wolff–Chaikoff study suggested that “too much iodine” could give hypothyroidism just as too little iodine. Older historical observations clearly rejected this. Nevertheless, it created “iodophobia” in healthcare and the media that is very active even today.
Brownstein writes: Medical iodophobia may have caused more human misery and death than both world wars combined by preventing meaningful clinical research in the daily amount of iodine necessary for optimal physical and mental health.
Table salt
The usual cheap table salt has been treated so that the original beneficial micronutrients are gone and added unnatural additives which may include poisonous potassium iodide, fluorine and aluminum derivatives. If iodine is added, it is about 0.045 mg per gram, which was enough to prevent many goiters because the thyroid gland takes most of the iodine in the passing blood (1 liter per 17 min). With a daily intake of 1 g of iodine enforced salt, it gives 0.45 mg of iodine, of which 0.05 mg is utilized, which is not much compared to the 13 mg that is the real need, when all cells are accounted for.
Sufficient Iodine reverses hypo- and hyperthyroidism
An outer sign of low metabolism may be excessive overweight, which iodine intake gradually can counteract. Similar for high metabolism and emaciation. One condition is, of course, an adequate and good nutrition.
Fibrocystic breast disease (FBD)
Iodine deficiency causes often fibrocystic breast disease with nodules, cyst enlargement, pain, scar tissue and lumpy breast, generally in women of reproductive age. It is estimated that approx. 80% of women in North America experience it at some point or another. Initially, this syndrome occurs in the premenstrual phase of a cycle or involves the whole cycle. These symptoms can also occur in menopausal women on estrogen therapy.
Dr. Flechas has found that 50 mg Iodine per. day of Lugol’s Iodine is the dose that usually cures the pain in 1-30 days and the other problems over a year. Smaller doses do not work as well.
Iodine and estrogen
Dr. Brownstein: For women, a balance of estrogens (estradiol, estriol and estrone) is essential for many body functions, including optimal brain function, breast development and lubrication of the skin. In addition, estrogen balance helps to secure strong bones and can help prevent circulatory problems.
Imbalance is associated with weight gain, mood swings and disorders such as diabetes as well as breast, ovarian and uterine cancer.
Estrogen balance is impossible to maintain when there is an iodine deficiency present.
Dr. Wright’s research has shown that Lugol’s iodine can help maintain a correct estrogen balance that favors the often desirable estriol.
Apoptosis
Apoptosis is planned cell death of unwanted cells. All cells, like all living things, have a life cycle with growth phase, division phase and death phase.
Iodine is required for apoptosis, which is an orderly packing and removal, first of the inner parts of the cell, and finally of the empty cell membrane. A milder form is the renewal of cellular constituents, autophargy, which is stimulated by fast. An extreme form is necrosis where cell membranes are destroyed, for example. by stroke, heat, infection or poison, and the cellular content dispersed into the space between cells, which initiates an inflammatory response. Dry gangrene is a form of coagulative necrosis.
After apoptosis the cell may or may not be replaced by a new cell. One example is the apoptosis of swim skin found between the fingers of the fetus at some stage.
Without apoptosis, defective cells that can not be repaired will continue with impaired function, and some of them with divisions until they overwhelm the body. Cancer cells are examples of cells that usually do not undergo apoptosis.
Iodine is essential for apoptosis. For example, appropriate iodine plays a role in the protection against stomach cancer. (People living in areas with very little iodine, have multiple cases of stomach cancer.)
It is understandable how important it is for the fetus development that there is enough iodine for necessary apoptosis, so that the development works as planned. Otherwise, mental and physical retardation may occur, as mentioned in the introduction.
With enough iodine you can also understand that apoptosis can smooth out thick skin layers in the scar tissue.
At some intervals, the cells are replaced. There is reason to suspect that sufficient iodine has significance throughout the life, eg. for different intelligence forms. This is confirmed with groups of children.
The magical limit for iodine dose
When iodine dose exceeds approx. 14 mg / day, the larger iodine concentration will allow iodine to form iodine fats like delta-iodo lactone, which
1. Can actively regulate apoptosis and cell division, and therefore protect against cancer.
Are we simply designed to consume nutrition that gives at least 14 mg iodine per day?
2. Stabilizing certain reactions in the thyroid thus avoiding Hashimoto’s or Graves’ conditions.
3. These iodine fats are strong antioxidants. If the body is under severe attack by, for example, bacteria or viruses, delta-iodo lactone is produced in larger amounts. This requires extra selenium. You can supplement up to a total of 300 micrograms selenium per. day.
Diabetes and iodine
Dr. Flechas published 2005 a study of twelve diabetics. In six cases with range of daily iodine intake from 50 mg to 100 mg per day the patients were able to wean off of medications for their diabetes and were able to maintain a hemoglobin A1C of less than 5.8 % with the average random blood sugar of less than 100 mg/dl [= 5.55 mmol/L]. The remaining six diabetic patients were able to lower the total amount of medications necessary to control their diabetes.
Some remarks about iodine
Dr. Flechas: Most people over age 60 are becoming depleted of iodine due to the lack of iodine in the diet and that this particular group of individuals is also the group with the highest occurrence of thyroid nodules and goiters [and BPH]. Also of interest is that 25% of the people in this age category will become “senile” as a result of low thyroid (hypothyroidism). Iodine supplementation may alleviate these iodine-related maladies, but iodine testing and thyroid studies such as a thyroid ultrasound and thyroid lab tests should be conducted prior to beginning iodine supplementation therapy.
Dr. Brownstein has written a bestseller: Iodine Why You Need It – Why You Cant Live Without It. Here he writes:
Bromine is a toxic halide that has no known therapeutic value in the human body. Bromine, being part of the halide family (along with iodine and fluoride) can not only compete and bind to the iodine receptors in the body, it can also damage the NIS and block the target cells’ ability to absorb iodine. Due to our increasing exposure to the toxic halogens (i.e., bromine and fluoride), as well as our exposure to other goitrogens (perchlorate, thiocyanate, etc.), our need for iodine has actually increased.
Dr. David Derry writes: “Lugol’s solution is an iodine-in-water solution used by the medical profession for 200 years. One drop (6.5 mg per drop) of Lugol’s daily in water, orange juice or milk will gradually eliminate the first phase of the cancer development namely fibrocystic disease of the breast so no new cancers can start. It also will kill abnormal cells floating around in the body at remote sites from the original cancer. Of course this approach appears to work for prostate cancer as prostate cancer is similar to breast cancer in many respects. Indeed, it likely will help with most cancers. Also higher doses of iodine are required for inflammatory breast cancer. As well we know that large doses of intravenous iodine are harmless which makes one wonder what effect this would have on cancer growth.”
Dr. Michael Donaldson says, “Iodine stabilizes the heart rhythm, lowers serum cholesterol, lowers blood pressure, and is known to make the blood thinner as well, judging by longer clotting times seen by clinicians. Iodine is not only good for the cardiovascular system, it is vital. Sufficient iodine is needed for a stable rhythmic heart beat. Iodine, directly or indirectly, can normalize serum cholesterol levels and normalize blood pressure. Iodine attaches to insulin receptors and improves glucose metabolism, which is good news for people with diabetes. Iodine and iodine-rich foods have long been used as a treatment for hypertension and cardiovascular disease; yet, modern randomized studies examining the effects of iodine on cardiovascular disease have not been carried out.” Reference.

Dr. Brownstein: Japanese women are estimated to consume at least 12 mg iodine per day – almost 100 times RDT for iodine in the United States.
Interestingly, Japanese women have a much lower infant mortality compared to the United States.

Intake of Iodine

To protect the mucous membranes, Lugol’s iodine must be integrated into food or drink, for example. bread, potatoes, juices, water, etc. Iodine provides energy that is usually desirable at daytime.
The iodine doctors around dr. Brownstein and Dr. Flechas believes that a maintenance dose is at least. 25 mg / day or about 4 drops of 6 mg. This is also the most common in the above group.
Selenium is included in the thyroid gland chemistry, so it is wise to be covered with 100 mcg, but 200 mcg if you take iodine over 28 mg / day or are ill or contaminated by heavy metals / pesticides / insecticides (eg after removal of an amagam filling). The body saves the selenium, so you can take various amounts and you can also get too much. Brownstein writes in chapter 7 about selenium. This chart shows what various food provides.
An autonomous nodule in the thyroid gland must be removed before iodine supplements is taken. Only 5% of all nodes are autonomous .
Purchase of iodine
The 5% Lugols, which with KI contains 15% elementary iodine, is the usual concentration in the Brownstein forum. A standard pipette then gives 7 mg per drop.

Sufficient Iodine
Dr. Cousens has described an important recent iodine study and also given an overview of the benefits of having sufficient iodine:

Thyroid hormones are essential for life as they activate key biochemical reactions including protein synthesis, enzymatic activities, and function of target organs such as development of brain, heart, muscles, pituitary, and kidneys. Therefore iodine is important in the development of the fetus.
10) Iodine destroys pathogens, molds, fungi, parasites, and malaria without bacteria resistance.

No one has ever died from iodine overdose or allergic reaction; but each year 103,000 people die in US from properly prescribed allopathic drugs.

Low iodine is associated with low IQ’s with a difference of up to 13.5 points as cited in the Bleichrodt study of 1994 in children.

In perspective, microgram levels prevent and cure cretinism and goiter, milligram levels help prevent and cure many things as already stated such as cancer, fibrocystic breast disease, and Alzheimer’s, and gram levels have been used to treat syphilis, skin lesions, and chronic lung disease.
21) High doses of iodine may be used for wounds, bedsores, inflammatory and traumatic pain, and restoration of hair growth when applied topically.
22) Iodine helps in the diminishing of tissue scarring, cheloid formations, and Dupuytren’s and Peyronie’s contractures, which are hyper-scarring conditions.

Iodine is used by the stomach cells, also known as parietal cells, to concentrate chloride which is necessary to produce hydrochloric acid (digestive acid).
